YAKIMA HERALD-REPUBLIC

Yakima attorney Scott Brumback will run for the state House as a Democrat, joining Rep. Norm Johnson, R-Yakima, and Republican challenger Michele Strobel in a three-way race for Johnson's 14th District seat.

Meanwhile, Democrat Paul Spencer of Stevenson filed Thursday to challenge incumbent state Rep. David Taylor, R-Moxee, in the 15th District. And two challengers filed to face incumbent Yakima County Commissioner Rand Elliott. One, Geffrey Hoekman of Zillah, is a Republican, as is Elliott. The other, Kenneth Stevens of Terrace Heights, filed as a Tea Party candidate.

While Strobel and Johnson already have begun campaigning, Brumback filed for the race Thursday without having previously Carolina Hurricanes announced his candidacy. A self-described fiscally conservative Democrat, the 48-year-old is a former Republican precinct committee officer who admires Ronald Reagan as well as John F. Kennedy.

"I'm more of an old Democrat a Harry Truman Democrat," he said in a phone interview Thursday.

Along with his fiscal views, Brumback is socially conservative on the gay marriage issue.

"I'd say no, absolutely," he said.

He also said he probably would have voted against last year's expansion of state rights for same-sex domestic partners. That's been a key issue already in the race; Strobel has criticized Johnson's vote in favor of the expansion. That stance could put Brumback at odds with much of the state Legislature, which pending this fall's elections remains under Democratic control.

He seems fine with that.

"I'm going to be an independent voice," Brumback said. "Low taxes and fiscal responsibility."

Brumback grew up in Michigan "right in the heart of the auto industry" and got his values from those surroundings, he said. The reason he chose to run as a Democrat was based largely on his distaste for corporate interests, something he associates with the Republican Party.

"I identify more with watches-h working people," he said. "That's a simple fact. A corporation has no soul. They have no perspective."

In addition to his practice as a partner in the personal-injury firm Hurst, Brumback and Brusic, he is a member of the Army Reserve with a 24-year military career, counting four years as an armored crewman right after college. He also is a former Yakima County deputy prosecutor and has worked as an attorney for the city of Yakima.

He believes that background, particularly his work in the private sector, sets him apart from the incumbent, Johnson, a retired school teacher and administrator.

"He's a nice man," Brumback said. "I have nothing personally to say against him. But I don't think that going to Olympia with just government experience is very helpful."

Brumback is married with two children and a stepdaughter. He is a Michigan State University graduate and earned his law degree at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland.
